A burst of bright red on a slender stem earns Dichelostemma the rather more acheivable name of Californian Firecracker. Europe may lack the hummingbirds which are attracted to it in California, but we will be rewarded with a long lasting show of highly unusual flowers either in the garden or in a vase.
