There are some wonderful hostelries nearby - The Duke Of York
pub at Iddesleigh (8 miles away) The New Inn at Sampford Courtney
(2 miles away) and a tea room at The Finch Foundry, the National
Trust property only 400 yards from the nursery. There is a
wealth of overnight accommodation to be found nearby - we
can always advise if required.
There are several other National Garden Scheme gardens within
very few miles.
Directions
If you decide to travel to Cornwall to visit the many attractions
here, you pass our door by using the tiniest of diversions.
From the east you will reach the Exeter area by either the
A30, the A303 or the M5. Follow signs from near Exeter for
Bodmin and Okehampton which will direct you along the A30
dual carriageway. About twenty miles west of Exeter you reach
the first roundabout "MerryMeet". Take the left
exit. You are now on the old A30, which if you are old enough
to remember pre-dual carriageway days , you will recall as
being the most frequently blocked holiday route. About half
a mile in, you will see the first of the brown tourist signs
“Bowden Hostas”. Four miles along you enter the
village of Sticklepath. The National Trust's Finch Foundry
is on your left, then after 200 yards you will see the next
“Bowden Hostas” sign. Right opposite and on your
right is our Victorian house covered with climbers. To the
right hand side of the house on a small outbuilding you will
see the sign "Bowden Hostas". The Nursery and Gardens
are on the right immediately before the House, with parking
space behind the house.
Also
see the online map from multimap.
We
have The National Collection Of Hostas housed in our display
garden which you can wander around at your leisure. Many of
the specimens here are 30 year old mature plants which show
you the extent of coverage that can be achieved in time. From
here, you exit out to the sales area where plants can be purchased
and advice given. We will always be delighted to see you.
The garden has a little incline, but can be negotiated safely
by most able bodied people (and if not Tim can always be called
upon to provide Piggy Backs!)
Other
Gardens to Visit & Associated Helpful Information
Make
2008 a year for Garden Visiting
The National Gardens Scheme book is now printed and includes
even more Gardens to visit than before. The several Charities
have benefited by a total of over £ 15 million in the
last eight years. Our small contribution to that total depends
upon you visiting us. Hundreds of people visited us last year
on our two Open Weekends.
Hostas
& Hemorocallis
The British Hosta and Hemerocallis Society provides a meeting
place for those who have particular interest in either of
those genera. There are three Newsletters each year, an Annual
Bulletin, a weekend Meeting in July and visits to appropriate
gardens during the summer. The Annual subscription for the
Society is £12 single, £14 Joint, £16 European,
£20 rest of the world. Send to the Membership Secretary,
PO Box 256 STROUD, GL5 5WZ.
